July 2, 2016

Essential Home Items For First Time Buyers

Congratulations! You have taken that big step and finally purchased a home of your very own. Through all the meetings with your realtor and walking through many houses, you have found the one you will turn into a home. As a first time home owner, there are many items you will need to secure the safety of not only your property, but also your family. Sometimes we don’t know what we need until we don’t have it. Fortunately, we have a simple list that will ensure you are ready for almost anything that comes your way. Below you will find a list of items you will want to purchase to make your new home the best it can be now and in the years to come.

Tool Kit

From hammer and nails to different kinds of screw drivers, you will be needing a fully equipped  tool kit to not only fix things around the house, but to hang decorations as well.

Long Extension Cord

This will come in handy in a variety of ways from home improvement projects, to yard work, to hanging Christmas lights.

Fire Extinguisher

Safety first! You have a lot more to lose now should a fire break out.

Wet/Dry Vac

Whether it is unclogging a drain, sucking up liquid from a spill, or simply doing some great cleaning, these vacuums should be in every home.

This seems simple, but a bucket can be put to use in many way, both for storing cleaning items and for emergency situations.

Handy for putting up lights, cleaning out gutters, fixing hard to reach ceiling fixtures, painting, and a variety of other homeowner tasks.

New Thermostat

Get a programmable thermostat to increase heating and cooling efficiency.

Now that you own a house, it is likely any picture or decorations are going to be up for the long haul. Rather than eyeballing, use a level to get it right.

Power Drill

You may be surprised at how often this tool comes in handy. Look for a cordless drill for the most convenience.

Emergency/Disaster Kit

In addition to food and water, you will need flashlights, batteries, a solar powered radio, extra clothes, shoes and anything else you may need.

Measuring Tape

This is great to have from the get go, as it will help you know what furniture will fit where and will be helpful in making improvements along the way.

Home Vault or Safe

Among many of the perks listed here, having a vault or safe in your home gives your valuables a location to be stored where they will be hard to steal, mainly from the sheer size and weight of the container.

As you go throughout your home, you are likely to find doors, drawers, and other items that could use a little grease to keep from squeaking.

Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

If you home already has these, make sure they are working properly. Be sure to install extras in areas where fire or gas leaks may occur and close to bedroom, so the alarm will wake you should these disasters take place at night.

Alarm System

Paying for an alarm service will give you the peace of mind so whether you are simply going to sleep, or you are away on a trip, you will know your home is safe.

Home Automation System

These systems allow for you to control many things in your home including lights, music, fans, the alarm, locks, and more.

Home ownership is a great new adventure and will require tools you may not have considered before now. Keep in mind that these items are investments and will last for many years to come. Take the time to familiarize yourself with your new house and you will soon discover what your home needs.
